Hungerford High Street and Antiques Arcade
My new doll
Today I ran away! - with my good friend L, I "did a runner" this afternoon, after the household chores became just too much in the heat of the afternoon. I am spoilt for choice and convenience here, being surrounded by wonderful countryside and delightful old towns - the sort that seem to appear in all the romantic novels and travel articles about England, and which, I can assure you, still really do exist.

My closest "run away" town is Hungerford, about 8 miles from me, and very easy to reach through the country lanes in about 20 minutes. So it is all too easy to leap in the car when my fancy takes me, and escape to the enticements of this historic old town, absolutely crammed full of antique shops.

My favourite place of all, which I visit when time is short, is the Hungerford Antiques Arcade, where more than fifty shop units are under the same roof. You can see what I brought home with me from this trip in the second picture. 26 inches high and with a walking and talking mechanism, I will have such fun renovating this lovely doll, giving her a new head of hair and making some authentic clothes for her. My only query at the moment is - who is she, and how old might she be? (Any suggestions gratefully received!)

It was such fun to call in at L's house on my way - she was hoovering the floor at the time, so had very little difficulty in accepting my invitation to run away for an hour or two! I said it felt just like calling to see if my friend could come out to play when I was five years old - and it's true - unplanned, simple pleasures like this are just so much the best of fun!

Journal prompt - Where do you "run away" when you have some free time - or need to grab some for yourself? Who do you run away with? What is your favourite "illicit" thing to do?
