| Market Day in Newbury.....and a Market Place little changed in 110 years. The old photograph at the top of the page shows the Market Place in about 1890, and apart from the change between the market "stalls" which were mobile waggons in 1890 and static today, everything looks remarkably similar.
Market day has always been held on a Thursday and a Saturday, with different traders participating on each day. Thursday was the main day for folk from the outlying villages to take a lift with the local horse drawn carrier, into market for a good day out and to purchase all the essentials for the following week. Members of the older generations living near me still go to town on a Thursday if they are going in on any day at all. Journal prompt Do you have a local market? Has it always been there or is it one of the newer style of farmers markets springing up in many places? With a small notebook and pencil, take a walk around your own marketplace, be it permanent or occasional, and list all the stalls. Stand and watch the world going by there for a while, then on your return home, describe each one, the stallholders and the visitors. Maybe you can make a sketch or two, or take some photographs as an aide memoire? |
