My darling John & Jimmy
I am sending you a "Playbox" by this mail. Evelyn tore it by mistake. I have tried to mend it for you.
What lessons are you doing now? I see my "Jimjams" is still writing in pencil! Every mail I am hoping to see his letter written in ink - perhaps my Xmas letter will be an ink one!
You both did some fine drawings of torpedoes & Guy Fawkes in our last letters.
The rabbits are getting very tame, they hop about the house just as if they were cats - they have a look round the drawing room then into the dining room and then Daddy's office!!
Daddy is going out on tour tomorrow, up towards the Afghan frontier. I should like to go with him to see the country - it is very wild.

While Mr. Burlingham, Daddy's assistant, was up there, last week, some Afridies, who did not know that the Telegraph men had an escort (that's some soldiers - native sepoys it was this time, I believe ) fired on the camp one night. They wanted the Telegraph men to be frightened & run away & then the Afridies would have stolen all the wires and things left in the tents, but instead the Escort fired back and shot some of the Afridies, while none of our men were even touched.
I tried to do the doggies on this page first but they would not come right - still, I have left the rough copy as I thought you might like to see it.
With much love, my sons, from Evelyn, Betty and myself.
I am ever your loving Mummy
Ruth C Coode.
